A History Of The Bikini

Image: Brigitte Bardot

A HistoryBelieve it or not, the history of the bikini is a short one. The bikini has only been around since 1946! A Parisian engineer, turned lingerie designer, Louis Réard, invented it. Réard named this tiny piece of swimwear, after the nuclear tests on ‘Bikini Atoll’ in the Pacific Ocean, which was apt, as the bikini certainly caused a major explosion throughout the world.

At first, the designer could not even convince Parisian models of the time to wear his creation. A French dancer called Micheline Bernardini was the only woman willing to wear it and it was showcased for the press in Paris in the same year.

Still, the bikini was slow to catch on; it was seen as ‘improper’ and was banned from beaches, public spaces, and even beauty contests in many countries around the world. Brigitte Bardot was one of the first actresses to wear one on film, in 1952 in ‘Manina, the Girl in the Bikini’. She was only 17 years old and the film was highly controversial because of her appearance in her bikini. She was photographed wearing a bikini off screen too and probably has done more for the bikini’s image than any other actress worldwide.

The bikini gained popularity when other actresses started to follow suit and by the sixties it was becoming more commonplace. In 1962, Ursula Andress, played Honey Rider in James Bond’s Dr No. She appeared wearing an ivory bikini walking out of the sea, with knife and shell in hand and an iconic image of the bikini was captured. From then on, every style of bikini has become fashionable, from large brief styles with balconette bra tops, to tiny string bikinis and thongs.

The Best Holiday Books of Summer 2015

The girl on the train

Go set a watchmanYou’ve chosen your dream destination and the holiday wardrobe is sorted, so what next?

For many of us a holiday is the one time we can relax with a book so choosing the right one is important.  Most of us grab the opportunity when we can to read, trying to squeeze it in to our busy lives, but on our holiday we can immerse ourselves completely in a good book.  So do you want to challenge yourself with a complex plot or chill out with something light? The choice is yours.

Some people will choose a holiday book set in the location they’re visiting or written by a local author; others want to read something big as a holiday is when they have the time to get through it; others, meanwhile, will stick with tried and tested genres they know they enjoy. Remember to get the best holiday reading experience you need to finish the book whilst on holiday.

Whatever you choose, a holiday book is USGreyalways a bit special. Reading a good novel in a beautiful location can mean you remember exactly where you read it for a long time, possibly even forever. A good holiday book is the perfect way to make your holiday experience truly complete.

These are some of the bestselling books of this summer so far.

Top of the list is Harper Lee’s long-awaited, Go Set a Watchman, set in the 1950’s and featuring some of the characters from her previous novel, the classic To Kill a Mockingbird.

L. James has repeated her success of 2012 with her fourth book, Grey. This time the story is told from the point of view of Christian Grey.

The Girl on the Train – This debut novel from Paula Hawkins is a thriller with many twists and turns and a best seller for this summer.

Us by David Nicholls is the follow up to the incredibly successful One Day. So is it as good?  This one is different, a bit darker, but an easy read and a perfect holiday book.

We would love to hear about your favourite holiday books and your memories of where you read them.  Also, do share with us the way you choose your holiday books and anything good you have read this summer in the comments.
