A History Of The Bikini

Image: Brigitte Bardot

A HistoryBelieve it or not, the history of the bikini is a short one. The bikini has only been around since 1946! A Parisian engineer, turned lingerie designer, Louis Réard, invented it. Réard named this tiny piece of swimwear, after the nuclear tests on ‘Bikini Atoll’ in the Pacific Ocean, which was apt, as the bikini certainly caused a major explosion throughout the world.

At first, the designer could not even convince Parisian models of the time to wear his creation. A French dancer called Micheline Bernardini was the only woman willing to wear it and it was showcased for the press in Paris in the same year.

Still, the bikini was slow to catch on; it was seen as ‘improper’ and was banned from beaches, public spaces, and even beauty contests in many countries around the world. Brigitte Bardot was one of the first actresses to wear one on film, in 1952 in ‘Manina, the Girl in the Bikini’. She was only 17 years old and the film was highly controversial because of her appearance in her bikini. She was photographed wearing a bikini off screen too and probably has done more for the bikini’s image than any other actress worldwide.

The bikini gained popularity when other actresses started to follow suit and by the sixties it was becoming more commonplace. In 1962, Ursula Andress, played Honey Rider in James Bond’s Dr No. She appeared wearing an ivory bikini walking out of the sea, with knife and shell in hand and an iconic image of the bikini was captured. From then on, every style of bikini has become fashionable, from large brief styles with balconette bra tops, to tiny string bikinis and thongs.

A halter neck is always a suitcase essential. The straps are easily untied at the neck so you don’t get any dreaded tanning lines while lying down and this style will give you great uplift and a natural shape. Whether you’re just relaxing in your bikini by the pool or throwing over a beach dress, your boobs will be fully supported and still look great!

A Bandeau bikini teamed with a higher waisted brief is a super stylish look this season and will offer a bit more coverage than a typical bikini style or a little less coverage than a Taniki . Our bandeau styles also come with detachable straps if you’re after a bit more support and uplift.

A plunge bikini cuts lower and gives you a natural plunging shape. If you’re after show stopping cleavage opt for a halterneck plunge bikini – your boobs will still be fully supported with the underwired cups and look totally amazing.

A Balconette bikini offers a bit more coverage while giving you a similar look and feel that you are used to from your lingerie sets. You can adjust the straps to sit where is comfortable to lift your boobs – Florence, Medina & Hattie are all perfect styles if you like a bikini to fit more like your bra.

All of our bikinis are underwired, but depending on the level of support you want make sure to choose the right shape and straps for you. You may find you are a slightly different size in swimwear when compared to lingerie, and you can look and feel different depending on the style.
