Finally academics have discovered something that the clever clogs here at Bravissimo have known for a long time. ‘Traditional measuring bust size methods don’t work’. The old process is measuring boobs with a tape measure and finding one measurement from under the bust and the second measurement from around the fullest part of the boob, the first measurement equaling the back size and the difference between the two measurements equaling the cup size. According to a recent report in a British national newspaper, this mode has proved totally ineffective, this is because our bodies have changed dramatically since the ’tape measure bra fitting’ was introduced, the average bust size has increased and this method only works up to a D-cup and lots of us ladies are bigger than a D-cup. The study carried out by the University of Portsmouth has recommended a five step ‘best fit’ approach, this entails taking and trying on the same bra in different sizes, assessing each one according to five criteria, which are:
- The length of the straps
- The shape of the underwire
- How well the back fits
- How well the cup fits
- Whether the front band is in contact with the breastbone
At Bravissimo we have been championing this way of fitting for some quite some time and we did get a mention in this article, as being one of only two lingerie retailers that use the correct approach, although our own steps differ slightly. Take a look at our Perfect Fit Guide.
We know that two best friends could have the same under and over the bust measurements on paper and take the same size into the changing room, one would find the bra fits and one would not. This is because boobs vary in volume, shape, size and spacing on every women even of the same size. So we believe in taking a few different sizes, trying the bras on and seeing how they look in the mirror and how they feel. This is essential to finding the right bra.
