Pepperberry's Check Woven Blouse

Pepperberry's Check Woven Blouse

The end of another bank holiday weekend. So, was it glorious weather anywhere in the country or, was it decidedly soggy everywhere? It maybe summer but don’t be fooled by that minor detail. You can stride out in the morning with your summer dress on, wearing your favourite peep toe shoes and by midday that same day, your feet are cold and you would rugby tackle a grandma for her cardigan.

The good news is that the transition between chillier and warmer weather at this time of year can easily be navigated with items that you probably already have in your wardrobe, add them to your summer clothes and you have a wardrobe that will see you through to August.

The denim jacket is a winner this time of year and everyone has one somewhere in their wardrobe. A denim jacket can be worn over a pretty day dress, see Pepperberry’s Cotton Frill Day Dress, or looks fantastic with a maxi dress, like Bravissimo’s Coral Print Maxi Dress, and, if sandals are a touch too optimistic, a pair of plimsolls will work just as well with both of these looks.

The other great transitional piece is ‘The Shirt’ – it can be worn with jeans, or this season’s khaki or beige chinos. See Pepperberry’s fabulous Relaxed Fit Chinos in stone. The humble shirt can also be worn with a button through denim skirt, which is more substantial than a cotton skirt, if the weather is chilly. So whether it’s classic white or checked, the shirt is a must, for the changeable weather. Don’t miss Pepperberry’s own version – the Check Woven Blouse.

A boyfriend cardigan is incredibly versatile, it can be belted and worn over tapered trousers or skinny jeans and can also be worn loose over shorts or a dress. Pepperberry’s Boyfriend Cardigan in Mocha looks fabulous over the Mint Swirl Dress, wear with leggings, if there is a nip in the air. Also everywhere in the high street at the moment you will find shorts. Love them or hate them, Pepperberry have a pretty fabulous pair, the Button Front Shorts in white, which look great with a wide striped vest or t-shirt, add plimsolls or a pair of wedges to complete the nautical look.

So we can now feel confident that whatever the British weather throws at us in the coming months, we have it covered and, someone once said, “There is no such thing as bad weather only bad clothes.”

A Royal Flush

This week saw The Duchess of Cambridge’s first official royal duties at Buckingham Palace. And if that wasn’t enough excitement for one day, we also got Michelle Obama thrown in for good measure.

We were fairly fond of ‘Our Kate’ anyway, she seems a lovely girl, down to earth and happy in her own skin. What we love about her, is that she chose to wear a high street dress for such an important occasion, which was a brave step and shows she knows her own mind. No doubt her advisors would have been urging her to use a designer, so how fantastic that our future queen is celebrating and supporting our high street. Incidentally, ‘that dress’ has now sold out in every high street in the UK.

The dress itself is a stunning, bandage, body con dress, and actually would work just as well on bigger-boobed Bravissimo girls. It is extremely versatile and can be worn as a work dress, with court shoes and a blazer or can be accessorised with gold chunky jewellery and hooped earrings for a glamorous evening look. For a similar dress you could try the Black Chevron Ponti Dress by Pepperberry.

Michelle Obama opted for a different style and wore a sweet fifties style prom dress in a damask floral silk satin by Barbara Tfank, a designer from LA. She wore it with a candy pink bolero. For a similar style dress take a look at Pepperberry’s Petal Print Dress and accessorise it with Grosgrain Tape Cardi in dusky pink.

For more gorgeous dresses just like Kate and Michelles’, keep checking the Pepperberry website, as new designs are being added regularly.

Battle of the Frocks

So this week saw one of the biggest nights in the ‘oh no not more TV awards’ calendar, the Soap Awards. However we love The Soap Awards here at Bravissimo, firstly because they look like they are having a right giggle and secondly because the fashion is so much more accessible than other big awards ceremonies like The Baftas or The Oscars. Yes, we love those events because of the sheer glamour and star quality, but our favourite soap stars dressing up to the nines for the night is much more fun. So let’s look at who got it very right on the night and who needs to sack the stylist.

Katherine Kelly (Becky from Corrie) looked stunning in a grey and yellow one-shouldered draped dress with a high split.

Jennifer Metcalfe (Mercedes from Hollyoaks) wore a black pantsuit, it was definitely show stopping but a bit too revealing, the trousers were too wide and too short, they would have looked more elegant, had they been tapered and longer.

Jessie Wallace (Kat in Eastenders) looked very glamorous in a white flowing, Grecian inspired dress with an encrusted jewelled neckpiece. Her accessories, makeup and hair, fit perfectly with the dress, nicely understated for such a statement dress.

Alison King (Carla in Corrie), wore a long tunic style kaftan, it wasn’t the best choice, Alison has got a great figure and this dress was shapeless and hid her body, it also looked quite beachy.

Shobna Gulati (Sunita in Corrie) should probably get another stylist, this outfit looked like she was attending a fancy dress party as a flamenco dancer! The tulle skirt was too big and fussy, the bolero looked like a bad eighties mistake and the pink shoes were not needed.

Jo Joyner (Tanya in EastEnders) hit the right note and wore a simple black fitted wrap body con dress, which flattered her bigger boobs brilliantly, she accessorised it with nude heels and gold clutch, her hair was just left natural and tousled and she looked radiant with a light tan.

If you’re attending a glitzy event this summer, and want to get the right look, browse our Pepperberry Evening Dress range and you’ll be sure to add a touch of elegance to the occasion.

The Weekend Starts Here

Lace Overlay Dress

Lace Overlay Dress

So this weekend kicks off with Friday the 13th, as legend would have it, one of the unluckiest days in the calendar, it doesn’t particularly inspire that Friday feeling as we welcome in the weekend.

So let’s turn this silly superstition on its head starting tonight, and if it’s true, that you make your own luck, this weekend could be your luckiest yet.

We can all fall into familiar patterns when it comes to our free time, just as much as we do in our careers. Instead of falling asleep in front of the TV after a take-away, why not plan a special night out or night in over the weekend. Suggest an evening out with friends, even if you have nothing to celebrate, start with early cocktails, then a few belly laughs over a meal, remember getting ready is part of the night, it’s great fun to really glam up, even when it’s not a special occasion. If you are coupled up, why not go out on a romantic date with your partner, it doesn’t matter if you have been together for years, try out a different bar or restaurant, go to a local museum or art gallery, or just go for a walk and take a picnic, make sure it is something that you wouldn’t normally do and it will create that instant feeling of being on a mini break.
The Lace Overlay Dress by Pepperberry is on trend in black lace and is a great LBD for a night out with your partner or an evening with the girls.

If you are exhausted from your week at work, plan a weekend of pampering yourself, take long bubbly baths, read a good book if you haven’t picked up a book in months or listen to the radio instead of watching the TV.

Do the lottery if you never have. Propose if you have been plucking up the courage or bake a cake, even if the last cake you made was in home economics. Have a great weekend, whatever you do, be lucky.

Dress The Part

Pepperberry's Ditsy Floral Dress

Pepperberry's Ditsy Floral Dress

A hot topic of discussion in the Bravissimo office today, which came about because of the beautiful weather we have been having, was, ‘What exactly do us Bravissimo girls wear to work or to do the school run, in this kind of heat?’ Shorts are a tricky option, sometimes best left for boy scouts or footballers, maxi dresses are great for the beach or a summer party but can be impractical for driving or getting on and off trains, and trousers – too hot! The best option is a really easy-to-wear dress, which can be dressed up or down with a smart linen blazer or colourful cardi. And the humble dress can be accessorised in a whole host of ways, changing the look entirely.

Pepperberry, (Bravissimo’s new clothing label), has some great dresses that would definitely fit the bill. Pepperberry’s range is designed with your boobs in mind, so no more having to buy two dress sizes too big just to fit your boobs! The very easy-to wear, Ditsy Floral Dress is a great little tea dress and to go from day to night, if your having drinks after work, you could wear with leggings, ballets flats and a denim jacket (check out Pepperberry’s Stretch Denim Blazer).

One of Pepperberry’s new arrivals is the Ikat Print Dress, it’s a light cotton dress in a warm ethnic print, and the clever part is the tabs on the straps that attach to your bra. Try accessorising with Bravissimo’s Wooden Necklace and Bracelet for daytime and to glam up for a night out, accessorise with the Chain Necklace and Gold Cuff.

If you are after a very wearable jersey dress then the new Mint Swirl Dress, in a tropical floral print, could be your summer staple and it will stay looking fabulous all day long. You can accessorise with the Glass Bead Bracelet and Glass Bead Necklace in colbalt and for a cover up when it gets a bit cooler, the Deep Rib Cardigan in magenta. Also new from Pepperberry makes a great contrast with the blues of the dress, grab the lovely Tassel Slouch Bag in coral to finish off the look.

The Oscars 2011

No need for piles of jewellery with the Crinkle Chiffon dress

No need for statement jewellery with the Crinkle Chiffon dress

The 83rd Academy Awards took place last night at a swanky Hollywood venue and the stars were out in force. Amazingly British film The King’s Speech took home four awards; Colin Firth won yet another Best Actor Award for his trophy cabinet the film also won Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. The Brits notoriously don’t do that well at the Oscars however Firth and crew proved that with the right film and the right cast, even die hard American film fans cannot deny the sheer brilliance of a film that captured the hearts of film goers everywhere. The States’ interest and intrigue with the Royal family might have helped somewhat with the popularity of the film across the pond but for us it was the sincerity of the performances and the strength of both the fabulous cast and storyline that did it for us

We were also pleased that Natalie Portman won Best Actress for Black Swan as we think the film was stunning and no-one can deny Portman’s dedication to a role. She looked great too in a gorgeous floor length aubergine dress and had that pregnancy glow that no amount of Hollywood make-up can recreate. Christian Bale took home Best Supporting Actor for his role in The Fighter and Melissa Leo won Best Supporting Actress for the same film. Other winners of the evening were The Social Network that won Best Adapted Screenplay and Toy Story 3 for Best Animated Film.

Watching the Oscars made us realise all the great films that we wanted to go and see but never got round to. Why not plan an Oscar night of your own? Get your friends together for a night of film watching, cocktail drinking, glamorous red carpet worthy dresses and then head out for a night on the town. You could get dressed up and go to the cinema or wait until the films come out on DVD and have an Oscar winner’s film marathon of must see films; Black Swan, The King’s Speech, The Social Network, The Fighter and for the big kids, Toy Story 3.

 Don’t forget the red carpet worthy dress;

1-     The 50s Wrapover dress is simple and elegant, we love it because it can be transformed from day to evening with plenty of jewellery and striking make-up. Wear this dress with high heels, killer arm candy and red lipstick for a glamorous 1950s look.

2-     Make a chic statement in the Nock Neck Shift Dress and add a splash of colour to your evening. We think this dress will look fabulous with statement earrings like Natalie Portman’s tassel drop earrings she wore to the Oscars to complement her purple dress.

3-     No need for statement jewellery with the Crinkle Chiffon Dress as the embellished hem and sleeves on this dress will do all the talking! Wear with metallic heels and clutch bag.

Try a fresh face for spring

Complete a bold floral print with bold make-up

Complete a bold floral print with bold make-up

 No, we’re not talking about some horror surgery scene á la Face Off (the film with John Travolta who swaps faces with a cop in order to fight crime). We’re talking about a fresh new make-up look especially for spring. Often we can get stuck in a bit if a rut when it comes to our make-up routine and this might not be making the most of our changing styles. Generally when transitioning from winter into spring, our clothes become lighter and brighter, so why not freshen up your make-up bag to complement this change in the seasons? There are two main trends this season; the natural look and experimentation with colour. And here’s how to do them;

Natural: a barely there natural look can be achieved by using a tinted moisturiser instead of a heavy foundation. We love tinted moisturiser as it’s very easy to apply, blends to our natural skin tone and provides just enough coverage for us to feel like we’re wearing something on our face without feeling clogged up. Add a swish of blusher and a highlighter cream or powder to the temple for a natural glow. Top tip: to finish off the look define the eyebrows with a pencil that is closest to your natural hair colour and dare to bare by leaving your eye make-up in the bag. This might be scary thought for some, however, not wearing eye make can produce a fresh and more youthful look, plus the definition of the eyebrows will help to add structure to your eyes without overdoing it.

Colourful: contrary to the natural look is the bold and bright colour trend which was popular on the catwalks for the spring season and when done right this look can have stunning results. From vibrant violet to contrasting shades of blue and orange, the key to this look is all about experimentation. The focal point of this trend is the eyes, try blending contrasting colours from the inner lid to the outer lid and add a swish of the brighter tone to the under lid to add drama to the look. To avoid looking like a girl who had raided her mother’s make-up case for the first time (or a drag queen) build your eye shadow up in layers. Start with thin subtle layers and build up the drama depending on the occasion i.e. add hints of colour for the daytime and go all out on a glam night out! If bold colours aren’t your thing then try a metallic shade and add liquid eye liner for extra oomph.

It’s important to consider your make-up palette for different outfits. For example a set of red lips will work perfectly with the Flower Print Shift Dress as the shade will pick out the red pattern in the dress and give a striking effect. When wearing bold colours though it might be advised it keep your make-up simple, our Notch Neck Shift Dress comes in a fabulous red shade, however red lips, unless perfectly matched could look too much. Therefore a softer more natural look would suit this dress, although classic dark eyes would give it more of a glamorous spin. The natural, barely there trend looks great when rocking a bo-ho outfit like the new Blue Print Maxi Dress from the Pepperberry range or to make a change from your everyday make-up routine. Get out of your make-up rut and try a fresh face for spring.

The Brit Awards 2011

Go for full on glamour this season with sequins and embellishments

Go for full on glamour this season with sequins and embellishments

Celebrating all that is great about British music (with the odd award for international artists) the 2011 Brit Awards took place last night and we take a look at who won what and more importantly, who wore what.

Who won what?

We were very happy that Take That won Best Group, an award they were also nominated for in 1993, however, with the help of Robbie they picked up the very well deserved prize 17 years later! They just keep getting better and we cannot wait for the tour. Mumford and Sons took home the Best Album award and for any of you who have seen them live will understand why, although their performance on the night was quieter than usual, a great band though and one we look forward to seeing more of this year.

Tinie Tempah received two awards; Best British Breakthrough Act and Best Single for ‘Pass Out’. Plan B took home Best British Male Solo Artist and Laura Marling took the female equivalent. If you haven’t heard of Laura Marling we’d describe her as the female version of Mumford and Sons, only there’s just one of her. Jessie J took home Critic’s Choice and the seemingly tough girl showed her soft side with a tearful speech. Cheryl Cole handed the Best International Female Award to Rihanna (there were no surprises there) and Cee Lo Green took the International Award for Best Male. Arcade Fire, a band that have proved to be very popular in the UK won Best International Album and fellow Canadian Justin Beiber scooped Best International Breakthrough Act.

Who wore what?

There were frights as well as delights on the red carpet of the Brit Awards; the frights mainly belonged to Jessie J who appeared in a very short, very shiny green dress and Rihanna who turned up looking like the dolly our Grandma used to have covering the loo roll wearing a very poufy dress. Cheryl Cole kept it glamorous with a sequined backless number and Katherine Jenkins looked simply stunning in her green floral strapless number. Adele looked elegant and classy in a ladylike black dress with beading detail and her performance proved that Britain has got real talent; she was simply stunning in every sense of the word.

Why not take a leaf out of Katherine Jenkin’s book and rock a floral print now. Our Woven Jersey Wrap dress has a jersey top perfect for adding comfort whilst the cotton print skirt will add structure and definition to your silhouette. Or go for full on glamour with the Sequinned Maxi Dress, maxis are big news this season and this dress will add sophistication whether worn on a red carpet or for a glam night out with the girls. For more fabulous dresses for any occasion click here.

The Baftas

It was an eventful evening at the Baftas last night with the usual plight of live television; rambling speeches (Helena Bonham Carter), presentation mishaps (Rosamund Pike) and wardrobe malfunctions (Helena Bonham Carter again).

The King’s Speech was the big winner of the night scooping 7 awards in all including Best Actor Colin Firth, Best Supporting Actor Geoffrey Rush and Best Supporting Actress Helena Bonham Carter, as well as Best Film. Firth was tipped for the Best Actor award after winning at the Golden Globes last month. The next big awards ceremony is the 83rd Academy Awards, better known as the Oscars held in Hollywood. This year the ceremony will take place on the 27th Feb, however, Brits infamously don’t do that well. Although this year it’s down to Films such as The King’s Speech to prove that when it comes to films, the British are a force to be reckoned with!

The other main winners of the night were Natalie Portman for Best Actress for her role in Black Swan. Although, heavily pregnant the actress wasn’t able to fly over for the awards ceremony but we think the award was well deserved for her captivating albeit disturbing portrayal of the paranoid prima ballerina. The Social Network won Best Adapted Screenplay and Toy Story 3 picked up Best Animated film. The Harry Potter franchise won Outstanding Contribution to British Cinema and understandably so as 7 films later and the craze is still amongst us.

British Actress Rosamund Pike almost revealed the winner of Best Original Screenplay before announcing the nominees; luckily Jonathon Ross was quick off the mark and ran on stage to stop her. It is safe to say that she won’t be anyone’s first choice for the task of award presenting any time soon after a long winded and unhinged speech and a very embarrassed co-host situation, poor girl.

The gorgeous Jessica Alba did manage to keep it together whilst presenting her award, although the butterfingered star did drop her cue cards when leaving the stage. We will forgive her however as we think she was by far the best dressed of the evening in her stunning bright blue strapless dress. We just loved the colour and will be looking out for bold statement blue tones for our summer wardrobes.

It might not quite be red carpet worthy, but our Spotty Cinch Waist dress in blue is an easy way to get some colour into your everyday wear. We love the flattering shape of this dress and the mild tummy control will help you to look and feel your best any day of the week.
