What Makes A Good Maternity Bra?

The Sadie Soft Cup Bra

In the last blog we talked about nursing bras and we hope you found it helpful if you have just had your baby or are nearing the end of your pregnancy. But what if you have just found out you are pregnant and need a maternity bra? Firstly ‘Congratulations’ and secondly, please read on as this article is for you.

Did you know that one of the first signs of pregnancy is tender and swollen boobs? As early as eight weeks into your pregnancy you may find your usual bra just does not fit anymore, and you may need to consider a maternity bra. It is a good idea to get yourself measured early on in your pregnancy, and remember your boobs will carry on changing, your bump will get higher and your rib cage will expand, so you may need to get yourself measured a few times during those nine months.

So, what makes a good maternity bra? Firstly it’s a matter of choice, whether you opt for wires or soft cups. You don’t have to wear a soft cup bra and can continue wearing an underwired bra. A maternity bra with wires will offer you more support and shape, but it has to fit you well. The wires in the centre, under your boobs and under your arms have to sit flat next to your skin, if they are riding out then the bra is not for you. Be aware to monitor how the bra feels, if wires start to feel uncomfortable during your pregnancy, consider switching to a non-wire style. The Sophie Soft Cut Bra

A soft cup style is more forgiving; you may get more wear out of a soft cup maternity bra then an underwired style.

For both styles, make sure the back band does not ride up, it needs to sit horizontally. Make sure you can’t get your hand easily under the back band, if you can, you need to go down in the back size. You should not be able to slip the shoulder straps off your shoulders easily, nor should they be digging in.

With underwired styles and soft cup styles, the cups should fully cover your boobs; there should be no spilling out. Also be aware that with soft cup styles the cups will sit higher, as they have to provide support without wires.

Super comfortable and also offering great shape for a soft cup bra, this will become an essential bra for your pregnancy. The Sadie Soft Cup Bra by Royce offers X-STATIC (silver polyamide) within the fabric, which is antibacterial, anti odour and themo regulating, so it will keep you comfortable and cool.

You won’t find a prettier maternity bra than the Sophie Soft Cup Bra by Panache. Made from the softest jersey, it has received rave reviews for its comfort and offers great support even though it is a soft cup and it goes up to a J cup. It also gives a lovely shape, so it really does tick all the boxes as a great maternity bra.

The Charlotte Soft Cup Bra

If you are a fan of soft cup maternity bras, then the Charlotte Soft Cup Bra by Royce will not disappoint. We have been told that this will keep your boobs supported and in place. A comfortable and pretty bra that will see you right through your pregnancy. And if you choose to breastfeed, you can buy the Charlotte as a nursing bra too.

A History Of The Bikini

Image: Brigitte Bardot

A HistoryBelieve it or not, the history of the bikini is a short one. The bikini has only been around since 1946! A Parisian engineer, turned lingerie designer, Louis Réard, invented it. Réard named this tiny piece of swimwear, after the nuclear tests on ‘Bikini Atoll’ in the Pacific Ocean, which was apt, as the bikini certainly caused a major explosion throughout the world.

At first, the designer could not even convince Parisian models of the time to wear his creation. A French dancer called Micheline Bernardini was the only woman willing to wear it and it was showcased for the press in Paris in the same year.

Still, the bikini was slow to catch on; it was seen as ‘improper’ and was banned from beaches, public spaces, and even beauty contests in many countries around the world. Brigitte Bardot was one of the first actresses to wear one on film, in 1952 in ‘Manina, the Girl in the Bikini’. She was only 17 years old and the film was highly controversial because of her appearance in her bikini. She was photographed wearing a bikini off screen too and probably has done more for the bikini’s image than any other actress worldwide.

History of

Image: Ursula Andress

The bikini gained popularity when other actresses started to follow suit and by the sixties it was becoming more commonplace. In 1962, Ursula Andress, played Honey Rider in James Bond’s Dr No. She appeared wearing an ivory bikini walking out of the sea, with knife and shell in hand and an iconic image of the bikini was captured. From then on, every style of bikini has become fashionable, from large brief styles with balconette bra tops, to tiny string bikinis and thongs.

Now that you know your bikini history, check out our new styles and dive right in!

Top of the list is Harper Lee’s long-awaited, Go Set a Watchman, set in the 1950’s and featuring some of the characters from her previous novel, the classic To Kill a Mockingbird.

L. James has repeated her success of 2012 with her fourth book, Grey. This time the story is told from the point of view of Christian Grey.
